In commemoration of World Intellectual Property Day 2023, SPA Ajibade & Co, one of the leading law firms in Nigeria, is organising an essay competition that is open to undergraduate and graduate law students of any tertiary institution, as well as young lawyers in Nigeria. For centuries, women have been making significant contributions to innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship worldwide. Though often unacknowledged, they drive scientific breakthroughs, set new creative trends, and build businesses, transforming our world. There is still a need for such creative and innovative women to utilize the protections that intellectual property will afford them during the process and with the end-product of their creativity and innovative skills to ensure proper legal consideration and the extraction of commercial value for these works.

At S.P.A. Ajibade & Co., we are dedicated to empowering women by providing them with the necessary guidance and resources to extract value for their creative works. In this regard, we are organising an essay competition to commemorate World IP Day 2023. We welcome undergraduate and graduate law students of recognised tertiary institutions in Nigeria (i.e. universities), as well as young lawyers, of no more than 3 years post call to participate in our essay competition.

Essay Topic: “Enhancing Women’s Participation in the Evolving Creative and Innovative Sectors: The Role of IP”


Prizes

  • 1st Prize: N75, 000 + 2-months internship
  • 2nd Prize: N50, 000 + 1-month internship
  • 3rd prize: N30, 000

Submission Deadline


 Midnight, 28th April 2023
Winners will be announced via a virtual meeting on Monday, 8th May 2023.


Submission Guidelines


A. Eligibility Criteria:

The competition is open to undergraduate and graduate law students of recognised tertiary institutions in Nigeria i.e. universities, as well as young lawyers of not more than 3 years post call.

B. Entry requirements:

  • The essay must be written in English.
  • Essay entries should not exceed 1,500 words or three pages (bibliography and references are excluded from the word count).
  • Entries should be prepared in font type Arial (11-points Black), with double line spacing and page numbering.
  • Entries should be submitted in both Word and .pdf format.
  • Entries must not include any pictures or other graphical illustrations.
  • Entries must not contain any indication of the author’s name, school, number, email address, or other means of identification or affiliation. This information should be included in your cover email when submitting.
  • Plagiarism of any kind will result in disqualification.
  • AI-generated works are not eligible for submission and will be disqualified.
  • Submissions received after the announced deadline will not be considered.
  • A valid student ID card or proof of enrollment will be required when submitting. For young lawyers, your Supreme Court number and evidence of payment of bar practicing fees will be required when submitting your entry.

All entries should be submitted to social@spaajibade.com on or before midnight, 28th April 2023.
