Since time immemorial, the press has always played a huge role in reforming the society in its own special way. This is reflective in the activities of Legal Kekenke for the past few months. In this editorial, we will delve into the activities carried out by this organization; its impact on the society and how these activities will further inspire future activities. From creating awareness to the uninformed to spurring or forming public opinion on matters which require it, Legal Kekenke has always strived to ensure that its standard is maintained, and improved upon.
The creation of the LK Blog created an opportunity for the organization and the public as well. It created a network that traverse without limitation, thereby promoting the dissemination of accurate information for the consumption of the Law Student’s Society, and the public at large. The blog created an avenue for a larger audience which boosts the outlook of the organization. It has also created an indelible documentation of news, reports, activities carried out by the organization. This confirms that the reports on the blog can be assessed at anytime, and anywhere without any constraint. This is considered a huge win for Legal Kekenke!
Likewise, worthy of mention is the improvement in the reportage of news and activities in LSS and AAUA at large. In the recently concluded AAUA Student’s Union Government General Election, members of Legal Kekenke conducted an opinion poll/ interview session before the election to gauge or have an idea of who the students were going to vote for during the election and their opinions on the disqualification of some of the aspirants. This development is first of its kind in the history of Legal Kekenke. Also, on the day of the election, representatives of Legal Kekenke were also in place to provide timely update on the results of the election. This shows the effectiveness of this organization and its commitment to its duty. Examples of internal news from LSS and AAUA is the coverage of the power tussle between the Law Students’ Representative Council and the LSS Executive Council.
Legal Kekenke’s devotion to posting weekly update and segments has been incredible. Face of the week, for instance, sought personal interviews of AAUA Law students such as Olalekan Olaniyi, Odogun Omoniyi, and students from other Nigerian universities like Adediran Fawaz and Temiloluwa Olowoyo. Other notable mentions are: 'Legal maxims' where maxims rooted in the law profession and dissected and explained; 'Weekly Nuggets' to encourage the students and the general public; 'Persona Dignor' features biographies of notable lawyers who have left an indelible mark in the legal profession; 'LK Courier' provides opportunities for contributory publication of works (articles, poems, stories etc.) from non-members of the organization; and the updates on scholarship opportunities, and legal and literary contests.
Also, the launch of the episodic release of podcast session with the name "The Inside Out Podcast" equally gave more foundational insights on campus related topics, and our motives as a media outlet. The activeness and amplification of our social media pages to propagate the works of the organisation also share similar motives.
Technically, the media has a role to to inform, educate, entertain and influence public opinion on various topics, events and issues. In essence, it has the role of articulating timely information to the public. On the aforementioned tenets, Legal Kekenke is predicated upon. As such, we are further driven to maintain this stance in order to spearhead this among universities' campuses.
