The election started at about 8:50 am this morning with the agents for the respective candidates voting first. Security agents were on ground to see to the smooth running of the election and to make sure students abided with the various rules and regulations laid down. The turn up of voters at the beginning was quite discouraging because as at when the voting started, there was a low turn out of students.
Students were not allowed to come in with their bags and any other campaign materials so as not to lead to conflict of interest. At about 9:45, the aspirant for SUG 001 in person of Adeosun Francis p.k.a. Francophone casted his vote along side the aspirant for SJC 001 in person of Elebute Aanuoluwapo P.K.A. Gabpet.
There was a controversy at the polling unit whether to allow students stay at the entrance or not which was not allowed. Agents were not allowed to campaign to students as they were coming in to cast their vote but majority of them failed to adhere to this instruction.
At 10:21, one of the security personnel cautioned the agents to reduce their noise as it was distracting. Securities were seizing placards from candidate not allowing them to do their last minute campaign as a result of them coming close to the polling site affecting the flow of movement but the placards were later returned to them with a strict warning of them not coming close. G-keys was asked to leave the polling unit as he was speaking with another voter (Henry) 100 level but he stood his ground not to leave insisting that it was his right to vote the candidate of his choice.
The Dean of the Faculty of Law at about 10:41 am graced the polling unit with his presence and he was accompained by Haybee and Teeclaziq to inspect the voting and advice that there should be no crisis.
At around 10:47 the number of students coming in to vote reduced. The security personnel threatened that he was instructed to arrest defaulting agents if they failed to adhere to the laid down instructions of not campaigning but they insisted that that voters were colluding amongst themselves. Israel (elder) called the attention of the electoral committee to two people sitting too closely in the polling unit as that was violating the main purpose of a secret ballot system. Voters were seen crowding the ballot boxes defeating the whole essence of a secret ballot system.
At 11:24 am, some of the members of the Student Executive Council were present at the polling unit to cast their votes. Alaafin, the incumbent president, Miss Busolami (Welfare Director), Ayodeji (sport director), Leklaw (Financial Secretary), Sen. Semilore (Senator representing Faculty of Law at the SUG level) , Amina (BOJ for class 23). At this time, the polling unit became busy with students coming out to vote.
Around 1 in the afternoon, a fight broke out at the polling unit between Alaafin and Peculiar Sam because the former went to the polling unit after he has voted which was against the rules given by the Electoral Committee. This turned out to be very big as many people joined in the fight with some people sustaining injuries from being beaten and some getting beaten up and slapped. After some minutes, the fight was settled and calm was restored to the polling unit.
Some members of Legal Kekenke took to the streets of LSS to ask aspirants and some electorates about their views on the election process. Mr Adekunle who was an aspirant for the post of Assistant General Secretary, was asked about his view on the election so far and he responded that the election has been good and the Electoral committee has been trying it’s best. When he was asked how he felt, he said he was anxious and was hoping for a good outcome. He also said that the election has not been peaceful due to one or two reasons when asked about the peacefulness of the election.
Akingbondere Babatunde P.k.a. BarryTee, an aspirant for the post of SUG SRC was also interviewed and asked for his opinion on the conduct of the election. In response, he said that to some extent, the election process has been reasonable with pockets of violence which are not far fetched in situations like this. He also said he was happy that students were not threatened to vote. He concluded by saying that the election was not peaceful as a junior student was beating a senior student which he affirmed that it will be addressed after the conclusion of the election.
Eniolorunda Bankole-Adams was also interviewed by one of our correspondents on his view on the election process. He described the election as a not completely adverse one; not completely calm which was expected and not completely bad. He also applauded the Electoral Committee for their good job and held that they were not at fault for whatever fight broke up.
Voting came to an end by 3pm and the counting of the votes then started immediately. Below are the results for the election
