A neuropsychological approach to understanding sound and human response to sound.

Introduction

The sensation perceived by our sense of hearing especially from music or any other idea is called sound. Sound has a profound effect on human emotions as well as our physical well-being. From the delicate sounds of nature, to the sounds of music filled with melodies and rhythms, sound can awake emotions and act on both our bodies and minds. Psychological and neurological factors that explain how we respond to sound as humans would be looked into in this article in order to help in taking advantage of the power of sound to improve our emotional well-being.


Psychological element of sound

It has been shown in various research projects that music and sound can evoke strong emotional responses, often tied to our own experiences and memories. This emotional connection is hidden in the so-called “brain reward system”, which activates dopamine, a neuromodulatory molecule that plays many important roles in cells, dopamine in certain areas of the brain to produce feelings of pleasure, satisfaction and motivation . . . . Dopamine also works on memory, attention, sleep, learning, concentration, movement and other bodily functions. The brain’s reward system also releases other neurotransmitters while responding to pleasant sounds. Thus, the psychological effects of sound can influence our mood, motivation. 

 

Sound and our neural Systems:

In the nervous system, the auditory cortex of the brain processes sound waves, distributes signals to parts that produce perception, movement, and memory. The amygdala, a system involved in emotional processing. Located in the medial temporal lobe, in front of the hippocampus in the human brain, the amygdala is activated by sounds with emotional significance, while the basal ganglia, a connected group of brain structures, consume phenomena that affect us whole body treatment . The basal ganglia is the part of human brain that plays the role of controlling our body’s ability to move, especially to rhythmic and percussive sounds. The hippocampus, the part whose work in the brain is to form memory , is also involved in sound processing, associating sound with past experiences and emotions. 

 

In conclusion, the science of sound is complex and extensive; having multiple gates to understanding it. However by understanding the psychological and neurological factors that trigger our responses to sound, we can therefore use these factors to improve our emotional, and physical well-being.
