Did you know that America gained independence from Britain on the fourth of July 1776?

Today's history celebrates a major achievement of one of the biggest countries in the world; the Independence Day for the United States of America. The Independence Day which some call the Fourth of July is a holiday that marks the Declaration of Independence establishing the United States of America as an individual and sovereign entity. 

July 4, 1776 commemorates the passage of the declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress. The Continental Congress actually voted for America's independence from Britain on July 2nd but the process of completing the revision of the Declaration of Independence wasn't done until 2 days later. The Declaration of Independence was originally drafted by Thomas Jefferson following consultations from fellow committee members: Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman and William Livingstone. 

Fanfare is expected on this auspicious day. Families go on picnics and barbecues, many towns and cities organize Independence Day parades and even the most popular form of festivity, fireworks. Fireworks are set off at parks, harbours, public spaces, town squares etc. Homes and businesses would also adorn their properties in the colours of the American flag; Blue, White and Red. These celebrations have thus become a custom and a tradition that showcases the people's patriotic spirit.
