The Law Students' Society, AAUA organized an Interchamber Debate Competition on Monday, July 22nd 2024 at 10:00 am. The debate competition featured the following public chambers; Akinola Aguda Chamber, Gani Fawehinmi Chamber, Kayode Esho Chamber and Olakunle Orojo Chamber.
The competition started with Olakunle Orojo Chamber competing against Akinola Aguda Chamber. Olakunle Orojo Chamber was in support of the motion that *COVID-19 is a blessing to Nigerian Law* while Akinola Aguda Chamber opposed it. Chamber heads of each of the chambers sat as Judges for other chambers, ensuring a free and fair competition.
Each participant was given a duration of twenty minutes with five minutes for rebuttals. At the end of the first round, Olakunle Orojo Chamber emerged as the winner with a total of 278 points against Akinola Aguda Chamber with 275 points. After an intense round between Gani Fawehinmi Chamber and Kayode Esho Chamber on the topic " *The judiciary has contributed positively to the development of Nigeria's electoral jurisprudence*
Kayode Esho Chamber emerged victorious with 289 points against Gani Fawehinmi Chamber with 270 points.
On an exclusive interview with the the honourable Attorney General of the law students' society AAUA , he said " This is the beginning of the competition, not the main part but a segment. By tomorrow we would know the best debating public chamber. The participants' performance were not below par, they all did well as there were even 100 level participants. This debate is the first of its kind in the mooting society and the participants did not disappoint "
Winifred Akiri, the lead speaker of Olakunle Orojo Chambers said " The outcome was a narrow escape but our best was put in and our results was expected. Personally, the competition was so exciting and educating at the same time because you never get to know your strength until you put yourself out there. An advice to subsequent debaters is that they should not feel like they are not good enough to represent their classes or chambers as it's always worth it and beyond winning, there's this feeling you get when you are there doing something and the feeling cannot be explained, thank you to Law Students' Society for giving me the opportunity to do this"
The ultimate round will take place on Tuesday, July 23rd between Olakunle Orojo Chamber and Kayode Esho Chamber. Best wishes to the finalists.
