The Mooting Club is an organisation under the aegis of the Law Students' Society and The Faculty of Law. The Club's aim is to develop and hone lawyering skills in students of the faculty beyond the theoretical approach and construct of classroom lectures.
The Mooting Club is headed by the Honourable Attorney General of The Law Students' Society. Olukoju Peace, a 400 level law student is the current Attorney General. She was appointed pursuant to Section 10 of the Law Students' Society Constitution . The Attorney General is the chief law officer of the society and also the chairman of the Law Students' Society Mooting Club.
On Tuesday, 14th of January, the Mooting Club organized an orientation not only for the fresh law students but also for all members of the Law Students' Society, especially those interested in improving their mooting skills. The theme of the orientation "Beyond the LT" accentuated the fact that the talk was beyond the normal theoretical knowledge students are taught in the classroom.
The orientation was the first of its kind and was an impactful one. The orientation started at exactly 11:19 am with prayers led by Feranmi and Adeboye; two law freshmen. Subsequently followed by a welcome address from the host; the Attorney General.
The orientation featured four poignant and keynote speakers from the four public chambers in the society. By the virtue of Section 41 of the Law Students' Society Constitution, every LSSite belongs to a chamber where inter, intra chamber activities amongst others are carried out. These chambers build up the practical aspect of a law student's education and is very crucial.
The first speaker; Miss Anjolaoluwa Asangula, a 500' level student from Kayode Esho Public Chamber talked about understanding the priority skills needed as a lawyer. According to her, the most important skills needed are; researching skill, reading and writing publications, embracing public speaking and most especially understanding one's niche; that is, area of expertise.
The second speaker, Ogunfeyimi Gboyega is a 400 level law student from Olakunke Orojo Chamber. He is the current Attorney General of the chamber. He spoke on moot advocacy and described mooting as a stimulated court process. He said "There is more to everything you do or think". He also talked about the habits a student must inculcate to stand out in the world of mooting, which are; showing interest in chamber activities, avoidance of competitions with others and instead, compete with yourself. Finally, he encouraged the listeners to be ready to make sacrifices.
Amina Sulaimon, the third speaker is an impressive final year student from the Akinola Aguda Chamber, she has represented AAUA LAW in several moot and mock competitions. She educated the audience on moot advocacy, she defined it as a stimulated court room experience where students would play different roles in which a fictious story or case is read to the students. She also talked about steps in mock advocacy which include; role adjudication, personal research, and team work. She taught the audience the stages in mock advocacy, which are the pre-trial stage and the trial stage. She similarly educated them on how to address the court as a counsel. She emphasized the importance of learning how to read and write pervasively as a law student. Conclusively, She enlightened the audience on the numerous benefits of mock advocacy.
The Fourth Speaker is a member of The Gani Fawehinmi Public Chamber, Miss Sunday Crown, a 400 level technology law enthiusiast. She talked about the significance of creating personal growth in the field of networking. She taught the audience types of networking, which are; special and professional networking. She likewise mentioned the importance of letting your name precede you. According to Miss Sunday "In networking before someone can be of value to you, you must be valuable to the person too".
The audience learnt a lot from the speakers and were grateful for such a consequential opportunity. The Mooting Club is an important society where students get the opportunity to join national teams and even compete against international teams. To get more chances get involved with the Law Students' Mooting Club where everything learnt in the classroom becomes utilized properly and meets the real world. This provides an avenue to improve legal reasoning, online research and oral advocacy skills.
