14 Movies To See On The 14th.

It's the season of love. In a bid to spread the love around, we at Legal Kekenke have curated binge-worthy romantic comedies you can watch with your loved ones this Friday or even by yourself; after all Valentine’s Day isn't just about romantic love. 

Let's begin, shall we?

1. To all the Boys I've loved before (2018)

Key elements: a very handsome Noah Centineo, a beautiful Lana Condor, a hot tub scene, Lauv's 'I Like Me Better' and fake dating. 

I for one, do not know a single person that does not like this movie. It's so good Netflix went ahead to do two sequels. You just know it's good. It even has books. I think of it as one of those movies that changed the trajectory of modern romantic comedies.

2. Love at First Sight (2023)

Funny female lead, check.

British male lead, check.

An airport, check.

Sparks that fly higher than their aeroplane, check.

A wedding, check.

The possibility of never seeing each other again, check. 

It fits all the boxes to get you hooked. I'd be honest and say I didn't expect much of this movie but I was wrong. It's sweet without being cringy, honest without being forced. You can legit feel the tension. This too will set the mood for Valentine’s Day. 

3. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

We're going old school for this one. 

As soon as Cameron, a newbie at Padua High School, finds Bianca, he falls in love with her. However, to date Bianca, he must get her older sister, Kate, a mean feminist to date someone. Need I say more? 

If you're a tragic, hopeless romantic that has not watched this film, you really are missing out. It's great but don't just take my word for it, check it out yourself.

 

4. She's the Man (2006)

In this rom-com, we get the opportunity to have Amanda Bynes and Channing Tatum on our screens. 

Brief synopsis: she pretends she's a dude but she's obviously not. But she has to be if she wants to prove her ex-boyfriend, his entire soccer team and their coach wrong! 

This film didn't also leave their humorous lines at home. 

5. The Parent Trap (1998)

Another oldie here. 

You just know it's going to slap when the beginning soundtrack is Frank Sinatra's L.O.V.E- 

'L is for the way you look at me

O is for the only one I see

V is very, very extraordinary'

This 1998 classic tells a story of a divorced couple that decide to separate their twin children at birth. Safe to say, the other doesn't know that the other exists. Until, they meet at summer camp and plan a classic switcheroo. 

6. A Cinderella Story (2004)

We all know Cinderella. Stepdaughters, stepmother, fairy godmother, prince charming, glass slipper. 

Good. 

But do we know A Cinderella Story? This remake of Cinderella revolves around two internet pen pals who plan to meet in person at their High School's Halloween dance. 

Easy, right?

Wrong.

Just add a vain stepmother, airhead stepsisters, the school's popular quarterback, a job and a jealous girlfriend and then we'll see how easy it is. 

7. Mamma Mia: The Movie (2008)

This is the moment when your mother does not know who got her pregnant so you invite all three would-be fathers to your upcoming wedding hoping to know who your father is, without the men knowing or her mother, either. Did I also mention that it's a musical based on the songs of the pop band 'ABBA'?

Talk about drama and an amazing soundtrack. 

8. Friends with Benefits (2011)

Some people might be triggered but the title (cough, cough) but trust me, it's just a film. As the title suggests, two people naively believe that they can have a no strings attached relationship. Not with the chemistry they have but they naively believe nonetheless. 

Soon enough it dawns on them that someone is going to get hurt or in this case, the two of them. 

9. Warm Bodies (2013)

Have you ever watched a paranormal zombie rom-com? No? 

I think you should try this then. 

This film stars two young adults, Julie and R as they fall in love. 

Plot twist: R's dead. He's a zombie with a dead heart. 

Ultimately, though, we soon see that romance might just be the cure just like how they say true love conquers all.

A zombie love story never hit harder!

Side note: if a zombie can fall in love, what are you na doing?

10. The Kissing Booth (2018)

You most definitely cannot talk about modern romance without this movie making an appearance. 

Netflix brought to our screens a cheesy romance about a teenage girl who falls for a high school senior and the school's bad boy. I mean, who doesn't like a bad boy?

Unfortunately, this puts her lifelong friendship with said bad boy's younger brother in jeopardy. 

11. Wedding Season (2022)

Don't we just love mothers that matchmake us on dates? Asha and Ravi, the protagonists of this movie cannot relate. And not just matchmaking mothers, but mothers that set up dating profiles for us.

Talk about the need for grandchildren. 

Asha tired of her mother's meddling agrees to meet Ravi to ensure that her mother minds her business but instead manages to convince Ravi that they fake date throughout the Indian wedding season to get their parents off their back. 

Feelings develop and a secret comes to light. 

12. Rosaline (2022)

We all know the tragic tale of Romeo and Juliet? Well, meet Rosaline, Romeo's ex. 

How is nobody talking about this comedic retelling? 

The film takes us round the point of view of Rosaline who Romeo claimed to live before he fell for Juliet. 

It incorporates a secondary point of view from the one we know and love. 

Just take a moment to enjoy this classic, light-hearted and heartwarming movie that promises to make you laugh. 

13. The Perfect Find (2023)

One phrase: Keith Powers!

That's all, I'm done. 

No, but seriously, if you haven't already watched it, you should. It has attractive leads, an age gap romance and not the usual kind; the woman's older here. Plus, she's attracted to her boss' son. 

This movie very much covers drama and an electric connection. You can't deny that they don't look good together. 

Is The Perfect Find worth watching? You'd have to be a sadist to say no. 

14. Seven and a half dates (2018)

For my Nollywood folks, I did not forget y'all. This movie got direction from Biodun Stephen and was produced by Toyin Abraham and features A-list actors. 

Bisola, the firstborn child and a workaholic; more concerned about her career than a man encounters pressure from her father to get married as soon as possible and so he sets her up on ten dates with the hopes that she'll find love. 

What is it with parents and matchmaking? Anyway, you can decide to check this movie out by watching it on Netflix.
